Learn The Answer To Why Do People Talk In Their Sleep

Ask most medical professionals, Why do people talk in their sleep, and it is most unlikely that they will be able to give you a full answer. Whilst it is widely believed to be stress and anxiety driven, there is still not concrete evidence behind this.

Somniloquy, to give the condition its scientific handle, affects a considerably large number of people. More than five percent of the adult population is likely to suffer, whilst up to fifty percent of children would have suffered at some point prior to puberty.

There are those that argue that sleep talking occurs in deep sleep, or REM. However, more recent studies show this not to be the case, and goes further by suggesting it has nothing to do with dreaming at all.

Rather than this, it is believed to be a similar experience to that falling sensation many of us get as we are dropping off to sleep from time to time. The jury is out on the precise cause but the end result is the same – you’re chattering away whilst you sleep, completely oblivious to the problem it’s causing those close to you.

When we are not in a deep sleep, or REM, there is an extremely fine line between consciousness and subconsciousness. The brain can experience very traumatic episodes at this time, which can manifest itself in sleep talking. This sounds frightening of course, but is far from harmful.

Indeed, the most damage that sleep talking is likely to do is deprive a sleep partner of their rest, which of course in turn can result to further complications in a relationship. However, there have been reported instances of aggression, which tend to mask underlying psychotic issues.

Whilst we do not fully understand precisely why some people talk in their sleep, it does seem that reducing stress, and avoiding late night consumption of stimulants such as alcohol, chocolate and caffeince, can help alleviate the condition for most sufferers.
