Everyone talks in their sleep at some time. Sleep talking is usually a verbalization of a dream or nightmare. What causes sleep talking (also known as somniloquy)? It is believed that people who are in a stressed or anxious state of mind are more likely to sleep talk than others who are more relaxed. Somniloquy also often occurs during an illness, when your body’s immune system is weakened.

Your top priority is to get yourself into the habit of sleeping for the same number of hours every night. If you can get 10 hours of quality sleep nightly, you will soon be experiencing the benefits of long, restful sleep, which will go a long way to reduce your sleep talking.

The extra sleep will obviously make you feel well rested in the morning, but the other benefit is that you will stop feeling anxious about rising early! When you’re used to your new sleep regime, you will be less stressed, less anxious, and far less like to talk in your sleep.

Going to bed after a large meal is bad for you. You may fall asleep alright, but your stomach will be working overtime. This may cause indigestion and throw your sleep pattern into disarray. Change your eating habits – for example, eat four times a day instead of three, and make the servings smaller.

You must keep your stress levels down, and take steps to reduce anxiety. This can be done by thinking positive, happy thoughts. Do some meditation or take a leisurely walk in the park. The key is to stay mentally peaceful during the day, and relaxed in the evenings. Consider taking up yoga – it’s a great de-stressor.
